Big Brother has hit a new ratings low - dipping below a million viewers for the first time ever.

The Channel 5 show recorded an average of 900,000 viewers for an hour-long edition - the smallest audience for the nightly round-ups of the programme since it launched in 2000.

The smallest audience for the show during its 11 series on Channel 4 days was 1.5 million in 2009.

The latest run launched on C5 less than a fortnight ago pulling in three million for its opening night, which settled to around 1.4 million for several shows.

But it dropped to its lowest level yet on Saturday night, the night following the first eviction which saw contestant Tashie Jackson bow out.

Saturday editions of the show have traditionally seen audiences dip.

Big Brother moved to Channel 5 this year following the end of its lengthy relationship with Channel 4.

The new series follows a three-week run of the celebrity version of the show which was won by Paddy Doherty.

A spokeswoman for Channel 5 did not wish to comment on the viewing figures.
