A handful of Hollywood A-listers decided to turn their attention to academia, as they headed out to the Breakthrough Prize award in California last night.

The awards, created by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Google co-founder Sergey Brin, were hosted by Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane.

On hand to bring some glamour to the night were singer Christina Aguilera and actresses Kate Beckinsale, 41, and Cameron Diaz.

Christina, 33, showed off her signature curves in a plunging red gown. She wore her platinum blonde her in retro style curls and was made-up with a bold red lip.

Sex Tape star Cameron Diaz, 42, went for a more casual look – sticking to an elegant black dress, leaving her dark blonde hair loose.

Also in attendance were Brit actors Eddie Redmayne and Benedict Cumberbatch who presented awards.

The actors both looked smart, with Eddie donning a tuxedo and bow tie, while the newly engaged Benedict went with a simple suit and skinny black tie.
