With 13 countries potentially up for EU membership this October - including Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Lithuania and Poland - the Foreign and Commonwealth Office are doing their bit to encourage a harmonious expanded Europe by updating perceptions of our new neighbours. In conjunction with photo agency Magnum, they've commissioned images from seven photographers for the exhibition, 'Images Of A New Europe', which shows aspects of ordinary life in these countries today.

There are over 50 images, which include Martin Parr's 'Latvia, 1999', Wylie's beach scenes in Bulgaria, Stuart Franklin's glitzy fashion shops in Poland and Hungary, and Gueorgui Pinkhassov's businessman hanging out in a Warsaw cafe. All are intended to highlight the idea of a Europe whose member countries share certain values but have retained their individuality.

As well as this exhibition at the Mall Galleries, a week-long programme of film shorts, documentaries and dramas from the 13 states will be showing at the Barbican from Thur 19-Thur 26 Sep. These include the prize-winning Cypriot drama Under The Stars.

A football match, mixing nationals from the candidate countries with retired players, will also take place at the London Arena on Sun 13 Oct as part of this year's Old Masters Tournament.

Images Of A New Europe, until Sat 24 Aug, Europe At The Mall Galleries, The Mall, SW1 (020-7930 6844).
