A live edition of ITV1's long-running drama The Bill brought the show its biggest audience for three years, overnight viewing figures showed today.

A total of 11 million people tuned in to see the show's cliff-hanger ending as Pc Gary Best plummeted from a rooftop.

Overall around 10 million people stuck with the show throughout - well up on the programme's average audience of eight million.

The programme featured dramatic stunts and viewers will now have to wait to see whether Pc Best will live or die.

It even included topical lines when Pc Jim Carver asked "when did Sir Paul have his baby?". The answer, delivered in song, was "Yesterday".

A spokeswoman for the show said: "The atmosphere on set last night was electrifying.

"It was an ambitious show to make but a fantastic way to celebrate 20 years of The Bill.

"Everything went according to plan."
