Wigan see off spirited Featherstone

Holders Wigan survived an uncomfortable night at the Bigfellas Stadium to see off a brave but battered Featherstone 32-16 and clinch their place in the quarter-finals of the Carnegie Challenge Cup.

Fresh from their euphoric 23-16 victory over Super League neighbours Castleford, Rovers eyed an even bigger scalp when they twice held the lead in Friday night's fifth-round tie.

The Co-operative Championship part-timers managed to keep a tight rein on danger man Sam Tomkins and were still in the hunt until Warriors winger Josh Charnley went over for his 16th try of the season on 64 minutes to enable coach Shaun Wane to breathe easily.

Second-rower Gareth Hock then made sure two minutes from the end with his second try of the match but Rovers coach Daryl Powell will be mightily proud of his players' efforts.

Sean O'Loughlin, Darrell Goulding and Thomas Leuluai also went over for Wigan with Charnley kicking six points and Tomkins booting two.

Tommy Saxton, Ian Hardman and Gareth Raynor scored tries for Fev with Liam Finn kicking two goals.

Jonny Lomax led the way as St Helens strolled to a 76-0 victory over part-timers Oldham.

Lomax finished with 28 points following tries in either half and 10 goals for Saints, who led 38-0 at half-time, while Francis Meli bagged a hat-trick and Josh Jones crossed twice.

Paul Clough, Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook, Iosia Soliola, Thomas Makinson, Paul Wellens, Michael Shenton and Shaun Megennis added further gloss to the scoreline.

Oldham, the only Championship One side left in the tournament, forfeited home advantage to attract a bigger crowd and had the consolation of a share of the 5,746 gate at Langtree Park.
