Heather Watson staged a remarkable comeback to beat world number 48 Sorana Cirstea 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7/4) at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old from Guernsey, who received a wild card into the main draw at the Premier event, trailed 5-0 in the final set but saved two match points on the way to a stunning win.

Watson will face 27th seed Lucie Safarova in round two but there was disappointment for British number one Elena Baltacha as she went down 6-7 (5/7) 6-3 6-2 to China's Zhang Shuai. Laura Robson also missed out on a place in the main draw, losing her final qualifier 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 to Hungarian Melinda Czink.

Meanwhile, James Ward failed to secure a spot in the men's singles, losing 6-3 6-3 in the final round of qualifying to Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
