Scott sidelined with hand injury

Edinburgh centre Matt Scott has been ruled out of the remainder of Scotland's viagogo Autumn Tests after tests showed he fractured a hand during Saturday's win over Japan.

The 23-year-old faces six weeks on the sidelines.

Scotland head coach Scott Johnson has called up seven players for Sunday's clash against South Africa at Murrayfield amid a number of other injury concerns.

Edinburgh quartet Jack Cuthbert, Tom Brown, Lee Jones and Ross Rennie come in, along with Glasgow pair Jon Welsh and Byron McGuigan and uncapped Leeds back Stevie McColl.

Scott went off in the closing stages of Scotland's 42-17 defeat of Japan and went to see a consultant in Leeds, where it was confirmed he had suffered a fracture.

Scotland team doctor James Robson added: "Happily, Matt does not require surgery. The usual return to play from an injury of this nature is approximately six weeks."

Forwards Ryan Grant and Alastair Kellock are making "good progress" after suffering concussion against Japan, as is stand-off Duncan Weir, who has a minor groin injury.

Man-of-the-match Tim Swinson (shoulder) and scrum-half Greig Laidlaw (calf) were forced to miss training on Tuesday but neither player has been ruled out of Sunday's clash with South Africa.

Johnson, who names his team on Wednesday morning, is taking no chances though and bolstered his squad considerably.

Two of the late call-ups are uncapped - Scotland Sevens back McGuigan and former Scotland Sevens and age-group international McColl.

The powerful 25-year-old Fifer, who can play full-back or centre, was players' player of the season at Greene King IPA Championship side Leeds last term.
