Royals dump Posh out

Pavel Pogrebnyak was on target during the Capital One Cup Second Round match

Reading squeezed into the third round of the Capital One Cup after edging Peterborough 3-2 following a frenzied first half at the Madejski Stadium.

The 7,262 crowd were treated to four goals in seven minutes during a spell that saw the npower Championship side take the lead on two occasions through Paul Taylor and Lee Tomlin.

Twice Reading equalised, with Pavel Pogrebnyak and Chris Gunter on target, maintaining a frenetic pace that eventually subsided. What proved to be the winner in the 38th minute was an own goal from Nathaniel Knight-Percival - the last of several defensive howlers that would have had both managers peering from behind their hands.

High-flying West Brom avoided an upset after securing a hard-fought 4-2 victory over Yeovil.

Two goals from Shane Long and singles from Chris Brunt and Craig Dawson cancelled out two headers by ex-Baggie Reuben Reid to book the Premier League side's place in the third round.

Aston Villa secured the first win of the Paul Lambert era as goals from Fabian Delph, Chris Herd and Darren Bent sealed a comfortable 3-0 win over Tranmere at Villa Park.

QPR beat Walsall 3-0, with Bobby Zamora's exquisite chip the pick of the goals, while Garry Thompson struck a dramatic winner as League Two Bradford knocked Watford out. Mustapha Carayol and Cameron Park grabbed a goal each as Middlesbrough dumped Gillingham out.

Managerless Coventry advanced after Carl Baker's strike gave them a 3-2 extra-time win over local rivals Birmingham. Teenage substitutes Mark Beck and David Symington were Carlisle's heroes as they dramatically came from behind to beat Ipswich 2-1 after extra-time.

Preston beat Crystal Palace 4-1, Leeds eased past Oxford 3-0 and MK Dons picked up a 2-1 victory over Blackburn.

At Turf Moor, Burnley came back from the disappointment of a last-minute equaliser from Plymouth to beat them 3-2 on penalties.
