Robson and Konta advance

Great Britain's Laura Robson moved into round three of the Guangzhou Open in China on Wednesday with a second successive straight-sets victory.

She will be joined in the last eight by her British colleague Johanna Konta, who produced an outstanding performance to defeat fourth seed Peng Shuai.

Robson, 19, is looking to at least replicate her feat of last year's tournament when she became the first British player to reach a WTA final for 22 years.

And she remains on course after she defeated China's Zheng Saisai 6-3 7-6 on a day when defending champion, Taiwan's Hsieh-Su-Wei, was knocked out.

Sydney-born Konta, ranked 141st in the world, claimed arguably the finest victory of her career by beating world number 38 Shuai 6-1 6-3.

Konta, 22, had to win two qualifying matches before securing her place in round one.

Robson will now meet China's Zheng Jie, who defeated Hungarian Timea Babos 7-5 7-6, while Su-Wei's conqueror Zhang Shuai is next up for Konta.

In other matches, French challenger Alize Cornet beat the Czech Republic's Karolina Pliskova, and she now meets Yvonne Meusburger following her victory in three sets against Serbia's Vesna Dolonc.

American Vania King is also through after she triumphed in three sets against Serbian Bojana Jovanovski, while eighth seed Monica Puig beat Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeava, dropping just five games in the process.
