Murray: Upsets happen every day

Andy Murray insists there are no easy games at Wimbledon
27 June 2013

Andy Murray had a message for tennis' fortune tellers as Roger Federer's exit capped a crazy day at Wimbledon - I told you so.

When the draw was made last Friday, there seemed no doubt it would be tougher to make the men's final from the bottom half of the draw. Federer and Rafael Nadal were in the same quarter, Murray in the same half, and he had dangerous grass-court lover Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to get past as well.

Fast forward five days and Murray is the only one of the quartet left and following his victory over Lu Yen-hsun, the Scotsman said: "Upsets happen every single day. You can't take any matches for granted. People want to do that often and just write people through to finals or semi-finals or whatever."

He added: "But it doesn't work that way. You need to be ready for every match. That's just the way that sport is."

Nadal did not make it past the first round, Tsonga withdrew injured during his match against Gulbis and, most shockingly, Federer was knocked out by Sergiy Stakhovsky.

Murray said: "Everybody was so obsessed with how the draw was before the tournament started. Now everybody wants to change their views on it because a few guys have lost.

"There's top players still left in the tournament, and there's a lot of young guys as well coming through, guys like (Ernests) Gulbis, (Jerzy) Janowicz. Those sort of players are starting to break through and play more consistently.

"I'll just concentrate on my next match. I'm playing a tough player, a very experienced guy. I'll worry about that match."

Murray was serene amid the carnage on Wednesday, easing past to set up a third-round clash against Spanish 32nd seed Tommy Robredo.

The highest-ranked player he could meet before the final is 15th seed Nicolas Almagro.
