Lewis Hamilton savoured the "incredible feeling" of grabbing pole position for Sunday's British Grand Prix, but is wary of being gored from behind by two charging Red Bulls.

For the 29th time in his Formula One career Hamilton will start from the top spot on the grid after conjuring a stunning lap that had the Union Jacks waving furiously around Silverstone and the fans roaring wildly with approval.

There was obvious euphoria as he assessed whether it was one of the best laps of his career, better than the one in his rookie season in 2007 when he grabbed pole in front of the home fans. "It definitely does feel like it's up there," said Hamilton. "It's special when you have that kind of gap as well, an incredible feeling. It feels like it did in 2007."

He added: "To see the crowd here today is fantastic, such a great turnout from everyone, so that was a lap for them. I just hope tomorrow we can do something special for them, but this is really down to the team. They've been doing a phenomenal job by constantly improving the car.

"I haven't been feeling 100 per cent comfortable all weekend, so I was really happy to finally get a lap."

But with triple world champion Sebastian Vettel directly behind him, and with Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber alongside the German, the 28-year-old knows what to expect.

"The Red Bulls are going to be very hard to beat, without doubt," added Hamilton. "They've been dominant for the majority of the year, and we are getting closer, although I don't feel we are there just yet.

"But we will do what we can tomorrow. We're in the best position to fight with them. It's not the easiest track to overtake, but we will do the best we can to try to keep them at bay.

"I don't think our long run pace is as bad as we've seen in the past, so I'm hoping with the temperatures (forecast to be higher tomorrow) and a bit of care, we can nurture the tyres to get a good result.

"I'm going to be pushing, giving it my all - as I'm sure Nico will as well - to finish up ahead."
