Yamile Aldama
12 March 2012

Britain won their second medal at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul as veteran Yamile Aldama claimed gold in the women's triple jump.

Aldama - labelled a "Plastic Brit" in some quarters after previously competing for Cuba and Sudan - produced a brilliant jump of 14.82 metres in the second round.

The 39-year-old then appeared to suffer an injury during her third round jump - which was a foul - but did not even need to jump again as none of her rivals were able to overhaul her.

Olga Rypakova of Kazakhstan took the silver with 14.63m and Mabel Gay of Cuba claimed bronze with 14.29m.

Aldama said: "I'm so happy, very very happy. It's special, I'm 39, a mum of two. It's great, I can't ask for more."

Asked about being labelled a 'Plastic Brit' earlier this year, Aldama said at the time: "That's my answer, I laugh. I didn't come to Britain for athletics. I fell in love and wanted to start a new life.

"If anybody had a choice they would say, 'I want to compete for my own country' but Cuba did not give me that choice. I didn't get my British passport when I should have or I'd never have competed for Sudan."

Shana Cox was unable to add to Britain's medal haul when she finished fifth in the final of the women's 400m.

Cox set a new personal best of 52.13secs but was well adrift of winner Sanya Richards-Ross, the American winning in 50.79s ahead of Russia's Aleksandra Fedoriva.
