Mark Cavendish could be facing further sanctions after being involved in a late crash during stage 10 of the Tour de France in Saint-Malo as Marcel Kittel took the win.

Kittel broke in the final few metres to pip Andre Greipel to the line, but behind Cavendish was sitting up after colliding with Kittel's lead-out man Tom Veelers and sending the Dutchman to the ground.

Before seeing a replay of the incident, Cavendish wrote on Twitter: "Whatever has happened, if I'm at fault, I'm sorry. There's no way I'd move on a rider deliberately, especially one not contesting a sprint. I hope @tom_veelers is ok."

Moments later, he tweeted again: "Just seen the sprint. I believe I didn't move line. I'm actually coming past Veelers & we touch elbows when he moves. Anyway, hope he's ok."
