Anderson edges past Lloyd

Beau Anderson edged out Colin Lloyd
18 December 2013

Beau Anderson landed a double eight in sudden death to clinch a dramatic 3-2 first-round victory over Colin Lloyd at the PDC World Darts Championship.

The Australian nicked the first set with a double 20 on his pressure third dart but Lloyd soon levelled, hitting a maximum and landing an accurate attempt on double 10.

Anderson found his third 180 and put Lloyd in deep trouble when taking the third set, only for the 2005 World Matchplay champion to land a bullseye to complete a 110 checkout, sending the match into a decider.

Neither man appeared capable of edging the two-leg lead required to win, with Anderson missing three chances to close out the game in the eighth leg, and one more in the 10th.

But the Perth player's overall consistency would see him finally swing the game in his favour to find the left side of the board and book a meeting with world number nine Robert Thornton.

He told www.pdc.tv: "I'm very relieved to get through that after missing four darts to win it.

"I led the match twice but Colin came back both times and I thought my chance may have gone. But I kept holding throw in the decider and I'm thrilled with this result."

Zoran Lerchbacher later set up a first-round clash against last year's runner-up Michael Van Gerwen by dispatching Ben Ward 4-1 in style.

Dorset's Ward won the second set to briefly level the match but his Austrian opponent was too strong and powered through to victory with a fabulous 138 checkout.

Rapid-fire Dutchman Vincent van der Voort pulled off a 3-1 win over Matt Clark that sent him through to the last 32.

The 2011 quarter-finalist won the first set without reply and pulled off a 131 checkout in the opening leg but Clark took the second set to level the match.

Van der Voort capitalised on several missed doubles from his opponent to take a 2-1 lead and, despite being a leg down at one point in the fourth set, he powered through to end the match with a double 10.

Michael van Gerwen and Simon Whitlock wasted little time as they both advanced from the evening's late contests.

The Dutchman was never required to get into top gear as he dropped just one leg in beating Austria's Zoran Lerchbacher 3-0.

Last year's beaten finalist told www.pdc.tv: "I didn't play great tonight, but the first round is about winning, not producing incredible performances and ton-plus averages.

"Last year's tournament was incredible for me, it was just disappointing to fall at the final hurdle. Walking out onto stage tonight brought some very special memories for me."

Whitlock, a finalist back in 2010, was also a 3-0 winner, over Ross Smith.
