A woman has been charged with child neglect after a toddler was found abandoned in a pram in the street.

The two-and-a-half-year-old girl was discovered outside an address in Warwick Road in Carlisle, Cumbria, at about 11pm on Thursday.

Police issued an appeal over a woman who rang the doorbell at the house and then disappeared.

The people living at the address did not know the woman and alerted police. When they arrived, officers found the youngster in a pram.

Following the appeal a 41-year-old woman was arrested on Friday.

A spokeswoman for Cumbria Constabulary said the woman would appear at Carlisle Magistrates' Court later.
