Philip awarded top Canadian honour

The Duke of Edinburgh has been awarded one of Canada's highest orders.

Prince Philip was given insignias of Companion of the Order of Canada and the Commander of the Order of Military Merit by Governor General David Johnston, the Queen's representative in Canada.

During the private trip to Toronto, the Duke will present a new regimental colour to the Third Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment.

The Duke, 91, has served as the regiment's colonel-in-chief since 1953, an honorary title often bestowed on members of the Royal Family.

The short trip is his first major foreign visit since he was hospitalised in August following a bladder infection.
