A pensioner missing for two days has been found safe and well, police have said.

Lothian and Borders Police had been searching for Irene McCawley, 77, who was last seen at around 9am on Wednesday when she left her home in the Boghall area of Bathgate, West Lothian, to go to the butcher's shop nearby, but did not arrive.

She arrived at a relative's address in Bathgate at around 4.45pm on Friday afternoon.

Police said that specialist search teams had been carrying out searches in Bathgate and the surrounding countryside.

Earlier on Friday her family made an appeal for help to trace her.

Her son James, 41, said: "As a family, we are supporting each other through this extremely difficult time, and we are very grateful for all the support we have had from the local community.

"For mum to have gone missing without any explanation is very worrying, but we refuse to give up hope that she will be found safe and well."

In a statement police said: "Lothian and Borders Police would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance in this inquiry."
