The Irish Sun has dropped its topless page three pin-ups, saying it "caters for a different audience" to the UK edition which is keeping the long-running feature.

The paper's editor Paul Clarkson said: "The Irish Sun shares the same qualities and personality that make the paper great everywhere: entertaining and engaging journalism, quality sports writing and showbiz coverage.

"But it also caters for a different audience in Ireland and we always strive to reflect our cultural differences here."

A statement from the No More Page Three campaign said it was "really pleased" with the decision, which it described as "a huge step in the right direction".

Earlier this year, the new editor of The Sun said the newspaper would keep page three.

David Dinsmore, who replaced Dominic Mohan as editor, told Nick Ferrari's radio show on LBC 97.3 that it was safe from the axe.

The move to drop page three pin-ups was welcomed by groups including the Unison union and the Girl Guides.

Unison general secretary Dave Prentis said: "The tide has turned against showing these patronising images of women. The Co-op has recently asked for a cover-up and the Sun should get with the public mood and do the same."

A statement from Girlguiding said it was "a hugely positive step for girls and women" and called for an end to the feature in the UK edition of the paper.
