Hillsborough police evidence call

Tributes left for victims of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster

All police officers on duty on the day of the Hillsborough disaster should give evidence to new inquests, the Prime Minister said today.

Derek Twigg, Labour MP for Halton, said it was a "scandal" that some officers were refusing to co-operate and urged David Cameron to intervene.

Answering at Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Cameron said: "It is important, that anniversary coming up. As you know, the IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission) is investigating all of these complaints and in addition the families can make complaints to the investigative power tribunal as well.

"The Home Secretary has written to all police forces asking them to make sure they make available all the information they hold on Hillsborough and in my view that should include police officers co-operating with this vital inquiry."

Mr Twigg had said: "The 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster is less than three weeks away and the fresh inquests are due to start.

"Do you agree it is a scandal some police officers who were on duty on the day of the disaster are refusing to co-operate with the investigation and what will you do to prevent such a situation from happening again?"
