A man accused of killing a former cancer patient over a disabled parking space was "acting in self defence", a court heard.
Alan Watts, 65, of Biggleswade in Bedfordshire, is charged with the manslaughter of 64-year-old Brian Holmes.
Mr Holmes, from Sandy, Bedfordshire, died at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge on August 4, the day after a confrontation in the car park of the Biggleswade Asda supermarket.
Bespectacled Watts, wearing a green and white shirt, a green jacket and beige trousers, spoke only to confirm his name during the short hearing.
Luton Crown Court was told the defendant will say he was acting in self defence.
He will return to the court to enter a plea on November 18, with a trial provisionally set for December 10.
