A British traveller has been murdered on a houseboat in India.

Sarah Groves, 24, from Guernsey, was found in a pool of blood inside the boat on the Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir, on Saturday morning local time.

A Dutch national who had been staying in a neighbouring boat has been arrested on suspicion of her murder.

Local police said the victim had multiple stab wounds all over her body and a knife was found next to her.

The Dutchman, who is in his 40s, was said to have smashed open the door of her room during the night.

He fled with only his passport, leaving behind all his belongings before he was arrested in Qazigund, a town just under 45 miles south of Srinagar.

He had booked into a separate room on Thursday, police added.

Ms Groves had been staying on the houseboat for two months, the owner told NDTV in India.

Police said the victim's body will be examined to determine whether she was sexually assaulted before being killed.

Tributes have been paid to Ms Groves on Twitter. @Rouxelfc said: "Our world is cruel. Sarahgroves was one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. My life has been touched at the cost of urs."
