Britain enjoys mild bank holiday

It might not be the hottest day of the year so far, but it is still warmer in many parts of Britain than it is in Paris this Bank Holiday Monday.

Despite hopes of the temperature climbing above 23C (72F) - the record set on April 25 - cloudy skies have resulted in highs of 21C (69.8F) in London and 21.3C (70.3F) in Lincolnshire, with the possibility of 22C in those areas as the day continues.

With Paris seeing temperatures of 16C (61F), people in Britain can bask in the knowledge that they are enjoying more heat than those in the French capital.

And while it might not be as warm as forecasters thought, lengthy periods of sunshine and dry weather have been the order of the day - with Scotland and Ireland missing out on the best.

Alexi Boothman, a meteorologist at MeteoGroup, said: "Quite a bit of cloud about and that will shield the high temperatures coming in. It's now less likely to reach the 23C mark."

Ms Boothman said there would be a "little bit more cloud" in Ireland and said people in western Scotland could expect rain to move in.

Meanwhile, eastern Scotland is expected to remain "largely dry".

With London hitting 21C, Ms Boothman said people on the southern England coast enjoying the sunny weather could expect significantly lower temperatures than those further inland, with temperatures expected to stay around 13C (55F), 14C (57F) and 15C (59F).

This year's bank holiday is a big improvement on last year, which saw rain and a temperature high of 16C (60.8F) at Exeter Airport.

The highly anticipated weather comes after a miserable start to spring and has seen a surge in demand for barbecues, with Asda reporting a sales increase of 142% while Marks and Spencer said sales of its barbecue range The Grill are expected to double on last year.
