A British Airways flight from the US to Britain made an unscheduled landing at Shannon Airport in Ireland early this morning.

Service BA66V was en route from Philadelphia to London Heathrow.

The plane landed safely at around 6am at the airport in the west of the country, Shannon's website confirmed.

A BA spokeswoman said: "We apologise to customers who were diverted on the BA66 this morning.

"Following a minor technical fault, the aircraft was diverted to Shannon as a precaution. Another aircraft has been sent to collect customers and return them to London.

"The safety of our customers, crew and aircraft is of paramount importance and we would never compromise it."
