A woman has sued Google after it published an image of her with one of her breasts partially exposed on its map service Street View.

Maria Pia Grillo was awarded damages after a Canadian court found the company had invaded her privacy.

Google had blurred out her face, but Ms Grillo said she was identifiable by her car’s registration plate.

According to court documents she was shocked and embarrassed when she stumbled across the photograph while looking at an image of her house in Montreal in 2009.

The image showed her sitting at home with “part of her breast exposed”. She had been photographed leaning forward while she checked her phone.

The documents says she was mocked by colleagues and experienced a “significant loss of personal modesty and dignity” because of the image. Ms Grillo started legal proceedings against Google in 2011. The firm had argued she could not have a real expectation of privacy because the photograph was taken in a public place.

But rejecting this, Judge Alain Breault said people did not forfeit their rights because they were in a location visible to others.

Google was ordered to pay $2,250 (£1,250) as well as interest and court costs.

Ms Grillo’s house and the image have now been completely blurred on Street View.
