Wildfires threaten homes near LA

Wildfires raging along the California coast north of Los Angeles led to the evacuation of hundreds of homes and a university campus.

The largest blaze ravaged hillsides near the towns of Camarillo and Newbury Park in Ventura County, about 50 miles from LA. A 10-mile section of the famous Pacific Coast Highway was shut west of Malibu and California State University cancelled classes because of smoke.

Fanned by hot, dry winds, the outbreaks marked a fierce start to the fire season in the state.
