'When I pay taxes, it is for roads, for schools': How brave hostage challenged Paris terrorist during Jewish supermarket siege

Hostage-taker: Coulibaly railed against taxes during the siege

The fanatical terrorist who staged a deadly siege at a Jewish supermarket ranted to hostages about the Islamic State and women not wearing veils.

Amedy Coulibaly was confronted by one of his brave captives as he railed against paying taxes.

His cruel taunts were recorded after a phone was left hanging off a hook in the kosher grocery shop in eastern Paris.

French media quoted him as telling hostages: "They must stop attacking the Islamic State, stop unveiling our women, stop putting our brothers in prison for nothing at all.

"It is you who is financing (the government). You pay taxes."

The terrorist was then challenged by one of the captives, who said: "We are obliged to (pay taxes)."

Coulibaly responded: "You do not have to. I do not pay taxes."

The hostage said: "When I pay taxes, it is for roads, for schools."

Coulibaly replied: "If people manage to unite as they did for Charlie Hebdo ... do the same by uniting and saying: 'Leave the Muslims in peace'. Why do you not do that?"

French media outlet BFMTV also recived a phone call from the 32-year-old, who told them he had coordinated his attacks with the Kouachi brothers.

Coulibaly shot a woman police officer dead on Thursday, before staging the siege in a Jewish supermarket on Friday. He was gunned down by police in a volley of bullets as the drama ended yesterday afternoon.

A fourth suspect, Hayat Boumeddiene - who is the partner of Coulibaly - is still being hunted by police and is described as "armed and dangerous".

Coulibaly told BFMTV: "We just decided at the start, so they did Charlie Hebdo and I took care of police officers."

The Kouachi brothers also spoke to a journalist from the station during a seven-hour standoff with police at a printworks near Charles de Gaulle airport.

"We are just telling you we are the defenders of the prophet and that I, Cherif Kouachi, have been sent by al-Qaeda of Yemen and that I went over there and that Anwar Al Awlaki financed me," he said.

Asked if he intended to kill more civilians, Kouachi replied: "Did we kill any civilians in the past two days when you were looking for us? Come on.

"We are not killers, we are the defenders of the Prophet, and we kill those who insult him."
