Emergency services including a helicopter were scrambled to rescue hundreds of skiers left trapped in cable cars because of high winds.

The blustery conditions caused a tree to fall on to the cable, sparking an urgent rescue bid in the Italian Dolomites as mountaineering experts and firefighters feared it could snap at any time.

Using a helicopter, emergency teams accessed the 20 stuck gondola cabins with ropes, before carefully winching the stricken skiers to safety.

No serious injuries were reported.

Recent bad weather in northern Italy has wrought havoc for holidaymakers and locals alike.

This week a woman was crushed by a falling tree in Urbino in the Emilia Romagna region, and a man died behind the wheel of his car after it was hit by a rockfall in Tuscany.
