An "appalling" Halloween costume depicting a suicidal person slashing their arm has been removed from Walmart's website after outcry online.

The "Razor Blade Suicide Scar Wound" latex costume had appeared on the retail giant's website at a price of £3.25.

Walmart said the make-up set had been added to its site by a third-party and was removed as soon as it was brought to the company's attention.

A petition had been launched after outraged customers claimed the costume, illustrated with what looked like two deep cuts across someone's arm and a razor blade, glamourised self-harm.

It read: "This is not just a disgrace to the sensitivity to those who suffer from self-harm, but a shame on Walmart for making light of the situation.

"This ‘costume’ is real life for many people, many people who are contemplating volumes higher than self-harm.

"Suicide is not a joke, not a costume, and not funny.

"Many people who have ‘suicide’ or as I would call it ‘survivor’ scar wounds wish they could make them disappear.”

A Walmart spokesman told The Mighty website: "This costume is appalling and it was unacceptable for a third-party seller to list it on our marketplace.

"It clearly violated our prohibited items policy and we removed it when it was brought to our attention.”
