A US high school teacher is under investigation for allegedly feeding a puppy to a snapping turtle during an after-class demonstration.

Authorities are investigating an animal cruelty complaint about an “after-class feeding session” that reportedly happened in front of students at the Idaho school.

Preston School District 201 Superintendent Marc Gee said the alleged incident occurred last week and that officers are investigating, but did not comment on the animals involved.

The teacher, who has not been named by officials, has not been suspended following the complaint that was received by police on March 7.

School district officials asked concerned parents and students for patience and said the teacher had shown care, effort and passion for the job for years.

KSTU-TV reported that local animal activist Jill Parrish filed a police report, which alleged the dog that was fed to the reptile was apparently sick.

Ms Parish told the news station: "Allowing children to watch an innocent baby puppy scream because it is being fed to an animal - that is violence. That is not okay.”
