An American university student sparked hilarity online after appearing to discover he had failed a university exam on Twitter.

The shocked teen, who goes by the name of Taiwan Jones and studies at Howard University in Washington DC, spotted a tweet, written by Roy Handy which hit a bit too close to home.

Mr Handy, a photographer based in Georgia, said he had sat next to a professor marking exam papers on a recent flight.

After apparently looking over the examiner's shoulder during the journey, he tweeted: "This professor graded tests next to me the whole flight. If there's a Taiwan Jones at Howard, boy you failed the f*** out ya midterm."

The tweet was shared 35,000 times, with many people using the hashtag "#FindTaiwan" to try and locate Mr Jones and let him know the bad news.

After twenty hours, the tweet had also been liked 160,000 times. Mr Jones soon found the tweet and shared it, adding only: "..."

He later told followers: "So...I just found out I failed my midterms but also went viral on the internet and I don't know how to feel. I feel like I should just drop out and pursue the career of a Soundcloud rapper."

Thousands of people tweeted their messages of support to Mr Jones. One user wrote: "Dying. Sorry Taiwan, better luck on your final."

Another wrote: "Dang, aye it's okay. The whole Twitter family about to help you study for the next test."

At US universities, students write long "midterm" essays to demonstrate knowledge acquired through the academic year. These often contribute to a student's final grade.

The Standard approached both Mr Jones and Mr Handy for comment.
