US high school sprinter nicknamed 'White Lightning' runs 100m in 9.98 seconds

A Texan teenager nicknamed “White Lightning” ran 100m in 9.98seconds, a speed that would be good enough for an Olympic final.

Michael Boling, an 18-year-old senior at Strake Jesuit, broke the fastest 100m race record in US high school history at the Challenger Columbia Stadium in League City, Texas.

A 4.2mph tailwind prevented Boling’s time from counting officially as a national record, but it succeeds as the fastest “all conditions” high school time.

At the Class 6A Region III track and field meet on Saturday, the teenager competed in various events including the 400 meter relay and long jump.

Boling helped the Strake Jesuit team relay teammates, Job Trahan, Malik Campbell and Denzel Blackwell, win gold with a record time of 40.72 seconds in the relay race.

He also won the long jump event with a staggering distance of 25 feet and 2 inches.

According to the Huston Chronicle, the 18-year-old said he was, “really happy with the time”.

“It definitely felt good. My clock start was pretty good and right out of the gate I knew it was going to be fast, so I decided to turn it up a little bit and ran my best," he added.

The teenager posted a video of his 100m victory on Twitter saying, “New PR and 100m high school record all conditions, 9.98”.

The posted video has been viewed more than half a million times and received more than 13,000 likes.
