US Election 2016: Hillary Clinton and husband Bill cast their votes in New York

Hillary Clinton and husband Bill have cast their votes at a primary school as Americans went to the polls to choose their next President.

The school, in Chappaqua, near her home in New York, was packed with supporters as a smiling Mrs Clinton cast her vote.

She appeared as Americans turned out in their millions to elect a new Commander-in-Chief.

Crowds of people stood outside the Douglas Grafflin Elementary school with signs showing messages of support.

One supporter was seen wearing a jacket with Mrs Clinton’s face on it, while another held an umbrella with a “Votes for Women” suffragette logo.

Chants of "madam president" could be heard as Democratic nominee Mrs Clinton appeared at the school.

She walked hand in hand into the front entrance with former president Bill before the pair cast their vote at just after 8am on Tuesday morning.

As Mrs Clinton emerged from the polling station she told crowds: "I'm so happy, I'm just incredibly happy."

She shook hands and chatted people with the crowd nefore telling reporters it was "the most humbling feeling" to vote for herself.

"I know how much responsibility goes with this and so many people are counting on the outcome of this election, what it means for our country," she said.

"And I will do the very best I can if I'm fortunate enough to win today."

Mr Trump is expected to vote later in Manhattan.

Addressing his final rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he told supporters they were at the “crossroads of history” on their “independence day".
