US election 2016: Donald Trump claims race for presidency will be rigged to stop him winning

Jamie Micklethwaite2 August 2016

Donald Trump has claimed that the forthcoming US election is going to be rigged to stop him from becoming president.

The Republican candidate revealed his conspiracy theory yesterday at his latest appearance in Columbus, Ohio.

He made the shocking claim after first suggesting that the Democrat party had rigged their Presidential candidate election to ensure Hillary Clinton would defeat Bernie Sanders.

He told the crowd: “I’m afraid the election’s gonna be rigged. I have to be honest.”

He did not elaborate or offer any proof on his claims, only saying that he had been hearing “more and more” that the election would not be a fair contest.

Mr Trump also claimed that the Republic contest had been slanted against him, saying: “I think my side was rigged.

He later repeated the claim on Fox News, saying: “November 8th, we better be careful, because that election is going to be rigged.

“And I hope the Republicans are watching closely or it’s going to be taken away from us.”

On Monday night, Mr Trump said Mr Sanders "made a deal with the devil" and said of Mrs Clinton: "She's the devil."

The event in Ohio was Mr Trump's first campaign appearance since the start of his row with the parents of a killed Army veteran, but he did not address the controversy.

He spoke for nearly an hour in Columbus, but did not mention his criticism of Khizr and Ghazala Khan, Muslims whose son was killed in Iraq in 2004 fending off a suicide bomber.

Mr Trump has been widely criticised for his public feud with the Khans.
