Typhoon Mangkhut video: The shocking moment a hotel lobby in China is instantly flooded

James Morris17 September 2018

This is the shocking moment a hotel lobby in southern China is flooded during Super Typhoon Mangkhut.

The sea water hits the Sheraton Dameisha Hotel in Shenzhen with such force that its windows immediately cave in.

As guests watch on from an upper floor, tables and chairs are thrown by the water.

But Mangkhut began clearing up on Monday morning, having battered mainland China and Hong Kong over the weekend.

Hong Kong's financial markets were operating as normal, with commuters pictured on its Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system travelling to work on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, the authorities sought to clear debris, collapsed trees and bamboo scaffolding.

Parts of Hong Kong and Macau were severely flooded, but there were no reports of fatalities despite it being one of the strongest typhoons in recent years.

Mangkhut had previously barrelled past the north of the Philippines at speed of 124mph. After skirting past Hong Kong, it made landfall in mainland China. In total, 69 people have been reported dead.

The country’s state broadcaster, China Central Television, said four people had been killed in Guangdong, China’s most populous province of over 100 million people.

Mangkhut was forecast to hit the regions of Guizhou, Chongqing and Yunnan on Monday.
