The bodies of two woman bound together with duct tape have washed up from New York’s Hudson River, according to reports.

Both women were fully clothed and neither showed any sign of trauma, police said after they were called to reports of bodies floating in the river on Wednesday.

They were spotted in the water by a passer-by near the city’s Upper West Side neighbourhood shortly before 3pm on Wednesday, NBC reported.

Authorities told the news network both women were wearing coats and were bound together with duct tape.

An investigation has been launched in the shocking incident.

Images from the scene showed New York Police Department (NYPD) officers standing guard at the riverside as the area remained taped off.

The city medical examiner's office is to determine their cause or causes of death.
