Twitter users are worried how Donald Trump might make use of the social media site’s decision to double its character limit on tweets.

The US President, who frequently uses the site for explosive rants, made headlines after North Korea claimed he declared war on the country via the app.

And since Twitter’s chief executive announced the trial of the 140-character cap on messages being extended to 280, some users have expressed concern.

The social networking giant said it wanted users to “easily express themselves” and that it believes the current limit can make it difficult for those “cramming” their tweets.

But as the news broke, many users were more worried about the impact it will have on the US leader’s bold social media presence.

One user wrote: “Close your eyes. Imagine Trump using Twitter. Now imagine Trump using Twitter with 280 characters. Now close Twitter.”

Another said: “@realDonaldTrump has been wrecking America 140 characters at a time. Imagine what he could do with 280 now.”

And another added: “We don't need more characters we need you to prevent an accidental nuclear war.”

The backlash came after one of Trump’s tweets about North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un was interpreted by the rogue regime as a declaration of war.

Trump, who has more than 39 million followers on the site, had written: "Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at U.N. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won't be around much longer!"

The White House was forced to deny North Korea's bizarre claim that the US leader had declared war after the tweet.

The trial is being rolled out to a small percentage of Twitter's 328 million monthly active users, with the company saying it is "excited to see how those with 280 characters use it".

On what the new limit may mean for the US President’s online messages, another user said: “Twitter needs to limit it to zero characters and give this country a break.”

It is unclear if Trump is one of the users selected to take part in the trial.
