A former Trump spokeswoman has said slavery is part of America’s “good history” on national television.

Katrina Pierson, who was national campaign spokeswoman for Donald Trump during the election, appeared on FOX News to defend the continued existence of Confederate statues in the U.S.

Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi is campaigning to remove Confederate monuments in the wake of the white-supremacist violence in Charlottesville. Counter-protestor Heather Heyer was killed when James Alex Fields Jr drove his car into a crowd of protestors.

Pierson accused the Democratic leader of trying to “actually help these anarchists and these violent protesters tear down pieces of America, American culture, and American history.”

When Wendy Osefo, on the other side of the debate, said confederate iconography belonged in museums, not on state grounds, Pierson hit back with: “It absolutely deserves a place, because bad history is still good history for this country.”

Osefo then asked: “Slavery is good history?”

Pierson replied: “Considering where we are today! Where we are today! Absolutely!” she said.

This is not the first time Pierson, dubbed “Hurricane Katrina” by Texas Monthly, has caused controversy. In 2016, she called the Afghanistan conflicts "Obama's War" on CNN.

According to a NPR/PBS News Poll, 62 per cent of Americans think confederate statues should remain in place.
