This was the shocking scene after a train missed its stop and crashed into an escalator at an underground station in Chicago.

Officials said 32 people were injured after the eight-carriage commuter train derailed at 2.50am today.

The crash took place at the city's O'Hare International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the United States.

Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago said the train "climbed over the last stop, jumped up on the sidewalk and then went up the stairs and escalator."

This afternoon authorities were trying to establish what caused the crash but initial reports suggested the train was travelling too fast when it approached the station.

Investigators could not initially confirm how many people were on board when the train came off the tracks.

None of the injuries sustained are believed to be life-threatening.
