Thomas Markle on dramatic fallout with Meghan: I miss who she was... I don't know who she is now

The Duchess of Sussex’s father has told how he feels like he doesn’t know who his daughter is anymore but that he misses “who she was” before their relationship broke down.

Thomas Markle has spoken of his pain in a tell-all documentary on his dramatic fallout with Meghan and her and husband Prince Harry's move to break away from the royal family.

Speaking to Channel 5 from his home in Mexico, Mr Markle said when his daughter was born he “could not have been happier” and that he “just knew she was going to be special”.

But the duchess’s father said he now doesn’t know who his daughter is, saying: “I miss Meghan. I miss who she was, I don’t know who she is now. That’s the problem.”

The documentary, 'Thomas Markle: My Story,' which aired on Wednesday night, comes after Meghan and her husband Prince Harry announced they were splitting from the royal family.

Mr Markle said that, as a father: "I think I gave her a sense of duty and work. I think Meghan would say, I did a very good job as a father. She was growing into a very nice young lady."

But he said that now he is estranged from his daughter he does not expect to see her ever again.

“The last time they might see me is being lowered into the ground," Mr Markle said. “I don’t think at this point they are thrilled to see me or want to talk to me.”

Mr Markle did not attend Meghan and Harry’s wedding.

As he spoke about his relationship with Doria, Meghan's mother, he said she looked like a "deer in headlights" when she attended events with the royal family.

He said: "she never looks comfortable standing there," before slamming Doria sitting alone at the wedding as "the dumbest thing ever."

The documentary showcased old video footage of Meghan as a teenager, fishing and performing in high school plays, all shot by her father.

Harry and Meghan, who are now in Canada with their baby son Archie, are stepping back as senior royals and begin a "new life" as an "independent" family.

The monarchy was thrown into turmoil earlier this month when Harry and Meghan announced they wanted to reduce their official duties and spend more time in North America.

Mr Markle said the duke and duchess are turning the royal family "into a Walmart with a crown on it" over their decision to break away from the monarchy.

He said he believed Meghan was tossing away "every girl's dream".

Mr Markle added: "Every young girl wants to become a princess and she got that and now she's tossing that away, for, it looks like she's tossing that away for money."

He added: "Apparently 3 million dollars (£2.3 million) and a 26-bedroom home isn't enough for them. It's kind of embarrassing to me."

Mr Markle said he did not expect Meghan to get in contact.

"I can't see her reaching out to me, especially now ... or Harry for that matter, but I think both of them are turning into lost souls at this point," he said.

"I don't know what they're looking for. I don't think they know what they are looking for."
