Theresa May and Donald Trump have hailed Brexit as a “wonderful opportunity” to strike a "wonderful" free trade agreement.

Mrs May met with the US president on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday.

A Downing Street spokesman said the pair discussed “their mutual desire to form a wide-ranging trade deal.”

“They agreed that Brexit provides a wonderful opportunity to strike a big and ambitious UK-US Free Trade Agreement.”

The Prime Minister hailed the “deep and enduring” relationship between the UK and US.

"The relationship between the US and UK is a really special one, deep and enduring, but there's much for us to talk about as we go forward together, particularly obviously the ambitious and wide ranging trade deal that we want to do between the UK and US, but also our security partnership and defence partnership and those many challenges we are facing around the world and how we can cooperate."

Mrs May said she believes that it’s in both the UK and US’ “interests to do a good trade deal.”

During the talks, Mr Trump described Mrs May as a “good friend” and said their relationship had developed over the course of his trip to the UK in July.

She said that "different jobs have different challenges."

Before adding: "If you believe in your goal that's how you get there."

"I believe absolutely in delivering on the people's vote and doing it in the best way for the UK."

In her main speech at the UN General Assembly, Mrs May confirmed that the UK continues to support an international deal on the Iran nuclear deal and said that countries working together was the only way to address terrorism and nuclear threats.
