A woman has been killed in Texas by a police officer who shot her accidentally while aiming for a dog.

Police were called after a 30-year-old woman was seen unconscious in a grassy area near a junction in Arlington.

Emergency services arrived at the scene but did could not immediately spot her, police said.

When an officer saw her, he walked towards her and called out - but a dog ran towards him, according to police.

He then fired "multiple times toward the dog", the Arlington Police Department added in a statement.

The woman cried out, leading officers to believe she'd been hit by a bullet.

She was rushed to hospital but medics were unable to save her and she died.

A police investigation into the incident, which will examine bodycam footage, is ongoing.
