Around 1,000 holidaymakers in a Tenerife hotel have been placed on lockdown after a previous guest tested positive for coronavirus.

Health authorities in the Canary Islands confirmed an Italian national was diagnosed with the Covid-19 infection, sparking quaratine measures.

The patient, believed to be a doctor from Lombardy who was holidaying with his wife, has been isolated following the intial test and will undergo follow up examinations.

He had been staying at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace hotel in the south of Tenerife where a mass of guests have now been quarantined.

The press office for the town of Adeje confirmed restrictions are in place at the hotel complex.

H10, the company which runs the hotel, said that it has followed all precautions laid out by health authorities and guests are receiving "all necessary care and attention".

A statement said: "Following the report of a possible coronavirus case detected in a customer from Italy, staying at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace, H10 Hotels has implemented all health and operational recommendations from the health authorities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of customers and employees.

"Additionally, we are providing customers and hotel staff all the necessary care and attention so that, despite the inconveniences this situation may cause, they are taken care of in the best way possible."

Guests in the hotel are said to have been informed of the situation by a letter put under their doors.

A note, shared on social media, read: "We regret to inform you that for healthy [sic] reasons, the hotel has been closed down.

"Until the sanitary authorities warn, you must remain in your rooms."

Health authorities on the Canary Islands said people who had contact with the infected guest will be checked.

Another person in the hotel, writing on Facebook, said: "The hotel has told everyone to go to their room, a doctor is going to check soon."

He said that he had been able to leave his room but the hotel itself was on lockdown.

British national Christopher Betts, speaking from a room in the hotel, told Reuters: "We can see from the window there are security officers outside the hotel and about 50 hotel employees."

The H10 Costa Adeje has nearly 500 rooms, four pools and a gym.

Holiday firms Tui and Jet2 both use the four-star resort.

A spokesman for the firm Jet2, which has its headquarters in Leeds, said: “We are aware of reports that a non-Jet2holidays customer staying at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace in Tenerife has tested positive for coronavirus.

“Under the advice of the regional and the Spanish government authorities, the hotel has been placed under quarantine. The health and safety of our customers is our absolute priority, and we will release more information as it becomes available.

“In line with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice, our flying programme remains unchanged.”

This diagnosis marks the third person to test positive for the virus in Spain.

This follows a British man in Mallorca and a German man on the Canary Island of La Gomera, both towards the start of February.

It comes as Italy begins to lockdown areas in the north of the country as it faces a growing issue with the coronavirus.

Some 229 people have tested positive for the virus and seven have died in Italy so far.

A case of the coronavirus was reported on the Italian island of Sicily this morning, which is the first case to be recorded south or Rome. The focus of the lockdowns had been in the north.

Meanwhile, in the UK 13 people have been diagnosed with Covid-19 caused by the virus, including four who had been on the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was held in quarantine in Japan.
