Sydney siege: One dead and two injured by gunman after stand-off with police

A gunman killed one person, wounded two others then apparently shot himself in a Sydney factory today after a six-hour stand-off with police.

Heavily armed officers surrounded the signmaking business in the suburb of Ingleburn at 10.45am after being alerted to reports of gunfire.

Detective Inspector Mark Brett, of New South Wales police, said that when officers entered the building at 5pm they found the suspect, a 33-year-old man, dead with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Another man, aged 43, died at the scene and two were taken to the Liverpool Hospital. One needed emergency surgery and the other suffered superficial wounds to his lower body. Both were said to be in a stable condition.

DI Brett added: “Specialist police entered the unit where they located three persons, factory workers, hiding.” The three were escorted out of the business, Inline National Signage.

Reports from the scene said the suspect had an automatic rifle but DI Brett would not confirm what firearm was used, saying only that it was a “long-arm weapon”. He said it was not known what prompted the shooting, and would not say how long the suspect had been dead, or whether police negotiators had been in contact with him during the stand-off. The incident is not believed to be terror-related.

Roads were blocked, some firms in the industrial area evacuated and other workers told to stay inside buildings. One man was arrested at the scene for “hindering” the investigation.

Rogan Burns, who works at an entertainment agency about 50 metres from the shootings, said the area was in lockdown: “My colleague left to get the boss a cake for his birthday and the police came screaming in vehicles and told everyone to get back inside.”
