About 30 students were injured after a packed balcony dramatically collapsed during a house party at a US college.

The third-floor structure, at a property near Trinity College in Connecticut, buckled under the weight of the revellers on Saturday night, crashing into two balconies below.

Injuries included broken arms and head injuries but no one was seriously hurt, police said.

Deputy Chief Brian Foley, of Hartford police, said all three balconies were crowded with party-goers

He said: "That's some pretty weighty decks that fell down.

"We're very lucky there weren't worse injuries."

He added the wood in the structure appeared rotten and structurally unsound.

"Then you get 50 or 60 kids partying out there and it's obviously a dangerous situation,” he said.

Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin said it was lucky there were no fatalities.

He said: "There are dozens of injuries, but we are very lucky that there were no fatalities and no known critical injuries from what could have been a truly tragic incident.”

Trinity College is a liberal arts school in Hartford with about 2,200 students. It's the second-oldest college in Connecticut after Yale.
