Snow sparks state of emergency in New York

The governors of New York and New Jersey have declared a state of emergency as a major winter storm hit the northeastern United States, with nearly two feet of snow falling in some areas.

Thousands of flights were today grounded as heavy snowfall moved eastward from the Midwest, with freezing temperatures and high winds.

New York’s new mayor, Bill de Blasio, urged people to stay indoors and out of their cars and in New Jersey schools were closed.

More than 2,200 flights were cancelled yesterday, and by the early hours today a further 1,000 flights were also cancelled, according to FlightAware.com.

Weather forecasters warned of “whiteout conditions” tonight with blizzards and drifting snow.

Outreach teams were working to get homeless people off the streets in New York and Boston.
