Calls are mounting for shoppers to boycott Topshop after it was revealed that owner Sir Philip Green was the businessman who obtained a privacy injunction to prevent the media publishing allegations by former employees.

Billionaire Sir Philip has been named in Parliament as the “leading” businessman who was accused by the Telegraph of sexual assault.

The newspaper said it had been investigating claims about Sir Philip for eight months, but could not name him because of an injunction against him.

Since his name was announced by Peter Hain, who identified him in the Lords, scores of people have said they are going to boycott buying products from Topshop and Topman.

Hashtags #MeToo and #Pinknotgreen started to trend on social media following the news about Sir Philip and the allegations.

Writer Rachel Thompson wrote: “Topshop was my favourite shop when I was a teenage girl. I feel disgusted that this awful man has been literally dressing the women and girls of this nation for years. #pinknotgreen”

While another user on Twitter wrote: “I’ve been feeling :/ about topshop for a while but this news about Phillip Green is unreal and I won’t be shopping at topshop anymore #pinknotgreen”

And another wrote: “National Boycott Topshop day #PinkNotGreen”.

Craig Pankhurst wrote: “I suggest the UK immediately stops shopping at the Green empire #BoycottGreen #PinkNotGreen”.

The hashtag “#FeministsDontWearTopshop” was also trending.

Lord Hain's intervention came after Court of Appeal judges temporarily barred the Telegraph from publishing "confidential information" from five employees about a figure the newspaper described as a "leading businessman".

After his statement was made in the chamber and broadcast on parliamentlive.tv, Lord Hain confirmed that his statement referred to the Topshop boss.

The former leader of the House of Commons, told the Lords chamber on Thursday: “My Lords, having been contacted by someone intimately involved in the case of a powerful businessman using non-disclosure agreements and substantial payments to conceal the truth about serious and repeated sexual harassment, racist abuse and bullying, which is compulsively continuing, I feel it’s my duty under parliamentary privilege to name Philip Green as the individual in question given that the media have been subject to an injunction preventing publication of the full details of this story which is clearly in the public interest
