England footballers had their phones loaded with protective software to stave off hackers before boarding the plane to the World Cup, it has emerged.

The squad were given guidance on security issues by experts from GCHQ amid concerns over threats in Russia – with a particular emphasis on cyber safety.

Unlike some FA staff, the players have been allowed to take their own phones and devices but with extra security software installed which will be removed when they return home.

GCHQ’s National Cyber Security Centre also recommended the team don’t access online bank accounts while away, and avoid internet activity which could cause embarrassment if made public.

Gareth Southgate and his players were told to avoid using public Wi-Fi networks or the memory sticks often handed out at tournaments.

They were also advised on how to keep their possessions hidden in hotel rooms, beyond simply using their safes.

It comes amid a heightened state of concern over cyber attacks from foreign states, with Russia the “chief protagonist”, according to the head of MI5.

Andrew Parker said in a speech last month: “The Russian state’s now well-practised doctrine of blending media manipulation, social media disinformation and distortion with new and old forms of espionage, high levels of cyber attacks, military force and criminal thuggery is what is meant these days by the label ‘hybrid threats’.”

He added: “Our adversaries have proven to be early adopters of technology – particularly internet technologies: those extraordinary and exciting advances that increasingly power our economies and our lives.”

Meanwhile, manager Southgate has told the team to make themselves feel at home at their base in Repino, an hour outside St Petersburg.

He said players would be able to travel into St Petersburg on rest days, as well as spend time with their families.
