A leading Russian journalist is in a serious condition after being stabbed in the neck by an intruder at her Moscow office.

Tatyana Felgenhauer, deputy editor of radio station Ekho Moskvy, was attacked on Monday lunchtime after an attacker gained access to her office by pepper spraying a security guard.

Alexei Venediktov told Russian news service Interfax: "A man with a knife broke into the radio station and stabbed Tatyana Felgenhauer in the neck. She has been hospitalised.

"Her condition is serious but not critical. The attacker has also been apprehended and arrested."

Images released from the scene of the crime show a man being arrested by the police.

Ekho Moskvy is one of the few outlets for independent journalism in Russia, featuring reports which are highly critical of the Kremlin.

A news report on Russian state television singled out the publication earlier this year as working to advance foreign interests in Russia before the presidential elections in March.

The report claimed foreign NGOs providing Ekho with funding posed as a great a threat to Russia's stability as Isis.

The Standard awaits updates on Felgenhauer's condition.
