A young woman fought off a tiger with a stick in order to protect her goat.

Doctors said 23-year-old Rupali Meshram was lucky to survive after taking on the animal in India's western Maharashtra state.

She had run from her home after hearing her goat squeal, before hitting the tiger with the stick.

The animal fought back, and Ms Meshram's mother saved her by pulling her away and inside the house.

Both women escaped with minor injuries, but the goat did not survive.

A selfie posted by Ms Meshram after the attack last week showed her face covered with blood. She suffered injuries to her head, legs, hand and waist.

Ms Meshram was praised for her "exemplary courage" by one of the doctors who treated her.

Her mother Jijabhai told the BBC: "I thought my daughter was going to die."

She said their village often attracts wild animals because it is near a forest.

"I am a bit worried about returning to my village so soon after an attack like this, but I am not scared," she added.
