A runaway pet dog is home again after US police posted her "pugshot" on social media.

Officers from Cape May Police Department discovered Bean the pug in a garden in New Jersey on Sunday.

They quickly captured the dog and tried to get her to hop into their police car, but her legs were too short so they had to lift her, one officer told The Star-Ledger of Newark.

Back at the police station, they posted a spoof mugshot of Bean on Facebook with the caption: "This is what happens when you run away from home."

The picture was widely shared online and officers later posted a follow up photo of Bean in a jail cell saying her owners had been found.

The pug's owner Hadley Hubbard of Baltimore, Maryland, thanked police and posted that Bean was sound asleep.

Officers posted that Bean paid her bail in biscuits.
